A University of Texas-Pan American professor is asking the Edinburg City Council to implement a moratorium on digital “smart meters” as an electric provider prepares to deploy them in the city beginning in June.

AEP Texas will begin installing smart meters across Hidalgo County in June at businesses and residences as part of a statewide initiative to improve the electric grid. The meters — which will replace the old devices that meter readers checked — use a wireless communications technology to transmit usage date to power companies and provide consumers tools to monitor their electricity usage.
